tar cf / - | (cd /temp; tar xf -) or tar cvf / - | ( cd /temp ; tar xvf -) if you want to see every little file it finds and writes out, but that always seems kind of messy to me. | (pipe) is your friend. as the OS allocates dedicated memory as a fifo buffer for pipes you can actually use them strategically to speed up IO because the buffers will act as asynchronous caches, although since *NIX does asynchronous IO by default maybe its a moot point?
